TENNIS MENTAL COACHING PRESENTATION

SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCE

Why is so important Mental Coaching in tennis?

In a tennis match that lasts about 2 hours, it is only played effectively about 40 minutes, which means 70% of the time … …

… You are playing, but you are in YOUR MIND: thinking about the possibly failed previous point (past) or thinking about what will be the next point (future), but you are not IN THE PRESENT MOMENT.

As it is also an individual sport where there is no real time limit, there is a lot of uncertainty about the duration of the match as well as its de

When the EXPECTATIONS of the game do not coincide with REALITY, internal tensions are created (bodily, emotional and mental) that will create INSCONSCIOUS BLOCKS that will lower MY PERFORMANCE LEVEL.

THE CHANGE OF BELIEFS

Session with Alejandro Turriziani Alvarez ATP 1.315 (Lew Hoad Tenis – Mijas)

Discover the Mental Coaching work of CHANGE OF BELIEFS on-court with Alejandro Turriziani Alvarez, training on Lew Hoad court with  Alejandro Davidovich Fokina …

A tennis player’s beliefs are one of the most difficult aspects to change. They are forged with a wrong, negative or limiting idea.
To begin the process of change, you have to listen with great presence and attention to the player’s beliefs and what initiates and provokes those beliefs to accompany him towards new, more real and empowering beliefs.

READING THE BODY LANGUAGE OF THE OPPONENT

Savriyan Danilov (ATP 632) VS Angel Guerrero (ITF 99) : ON -COURT MENTAL COACHING (Tennis Group Academy - Marbella)

From TENNIS MENTAL COACHIING, in this video we present an ON-COURT MENTAL COACHING session with Savriyan Danilov (ATP # 632) and Ángel Guerrero (ITF #99) with a specfic work of …

developping the capacity of READING THE BODY LANGUAGE OPPONENT at TGA (Tennis Group Academy) in Marbella (Spain).
Trought the FEEDBACK technique, we help the player to be aware of in what he has focused when his body language is negative (thoughts, emotions, words, …) and give him Mental Tools to maintain the concentration and control his activation level.

MENTAL COACHING ON-COURT GROUP TALK

The 3 centers : MIND-BODY-EMOTIONS (ASP ACADEMY - Riviera R11 Marbella)

The MENTAL COACHING work can be carried out directly on-court with specific tasks, in collaboration with the coach’s training plan. In this case …

… you work on the 3 CENTERS: Body – Emotions – Mind and consciously experience how each of the parts affects the other. It is an experiential work to create AWARENESS, which is the first step to be able to integrate or change your management.

LOOKING FOR SOLUTION with Max BENAIM (ITF TENNIS PLAYER)

Off court Mental Coaching session (Riviera Sport Club - Marbella)

It is interesting to double work MENTAL COACHING in-court and off-court in order to complete the in-court job and focus more into the deep Beliefs of the tennis player (Max BENAIM – ITF Tennis player) and make the player discover …

… his own internal belief pattern in order to make him aware of his system of beliefs in front of a difficulty. In this video, we can see that at a start the player is not able to see and find a solutions, until he start to focus on himself and he start to look for solutions.

16 SECONDS CURE IN-BETWEEN POINTS ROUTINE

RIVIERA SPORT CLUB (Mijas - Marbella)

THE MENTAL COACHING ROUTINE “16 SECONDS CURE ROUTINE” is one of the bases for managing nerves, activation level, concentration … between points. From MENTAL COACHING TENNIS (TMC), …

…the management of intermediate points from the point of view of MENTAL COACHING is FUNDAMENTAL.
It is really important to DEVELOP HABIT PATTERNS that help you better control your level of activation and emotions (among others) in those tense moments of the game to reduce the impact of the previous point (if it is lost) and prepare YOUR MIND for the next point.
It is a pleasure to collaborate with Amarit SANCHEZ, CEO of AS PERFORMANCE TENNIS at RIVIERA SPORT CLUB (Mijas – Marbella) and with his competition groups.

The 16 SECOND ROUTINES are a 4-STEP MENTAL STRATEGY application that will help you FOCUS ON A SPECIFIC TASK at a PARTICULAR TIME.

STAGE 1: POSITIVE PHYSICAL RESPONSE
– Positive gesture
– Turn your back on the error (or opponent’s winning point)
– Eyes focused on a specific point
– Change the racket to non-dominated hand
– Positive words like “okay”, “goooo”, “next”, “vamooos”, … etc.

STAGE 2: RELAXATION RESPONSE
– Breathe deep and slow
– Cooling activation level
– Calm the mind and keep focusing on a single point
– Relax your muscles and walk slowly
– Go to “Safety zone”

STAGE 3: PREPAREDNESS RESPONSE
– Prepare the strategy for the next point in the security zone.
– Maintain a posture of trust.
– Move towards the baseline
– Look at the opponent
– Ask yourself: “Where? How?” …. to take the next shot
– “Mental programming period”

STAGE 4: RITUAL RESPONSE
– Prepare body and mind
– Reduce excess thinking
– Do something that turns off your brain activity.
. Automatically
. Always the same

(examples of service: number of bounces, activation jumps, visualization, body routine, …
examples to go back: Touching the body, preparing, level of activation, jumping, talking to oneself, fixing the eyes consciously focusing …)

EMOTIONAL MANAGEMENT ANALYSIS THROUGH FEEDBACK

CLUB TENNIS MALGRAT (Barcelona)

To begin with, FEEDBACK is an essential tool to know what is stressing the tennis player, without assuming what is seen from the outside, but asking the player with MENTAL COACHING techniques (see SERVICES), to know how you are feeling and what is …

… is moving him inside.

In this tennis video, we have the collaboration of Oscar VARIN (ranking # 300 from Switzerland) in a MENTAL TRAINING ON TRACK on FEEDBACK or FEEDBACK …

Through the FEEDBACK technique and “POWERFUL QUESTIONS” that help the player to be aware of what is happening to him and what are the internal reasons (that are not seen) for his failures.

The player is accompanied to look for himself what causes him that muscular tension that causes the failure, as well as the associated emotion that is underneath that which is the source of his error.

Also, it seeks to associate the type of player character, “THE PERFETIONIST” in this case, which allows them to understand where their automatic responses to pressure come from.

Finally, the role of the “interpretation” of the result can be made conscious and no longer in the “HERE and NOW” but focused on the future and the result.
This shows the loss of focus of the present moment and being able to work on your AWARENESS to improve it.

This video allows you to know an example of Mental Training SERVICES offered by TENNIS MENTAL COACHING (TMC)

THE POWER OF THE INTENTION : ON-COURT MENTAL COACHING

Ángel Guerrero (ITF # 99) and Savriyan Danilov (ATP # 632)

at TGA Marbella

The POWER OF INTENTION is worked on-court session, that is, being aware of where and where the ATTENTIONAL FOCUS is placed in order to …

improve the level of concentration, as well as sports performance.
Through the FEEDBACK technique in this MENTAL COACHING session on the court, the objective is to help the tennis player to focus more and better on the task and on what he has to do.
For that, what we do is help you orient your attention focus so that your decisions can be more conscious and with greater intention.

ROUTINE ANALYSIS OF STEFANOS TSISIPAS

Analysis of mental routines between points

Also, discover the analysis of the MENTAL ROUTINES BETWEEN POINTS of the player Tsefanos TSISIPAS in the Conté de Godo tournament (at the Real Tennis Club de Tenis Barcelona – RCTB 1899) where we will explain …

  • Mental routine when point won:
    Celebrate every point earned.
    Self motivation.
Body language of force (closed fist).
    Strong body attitude.

  • Mental routine in between points:
    Return to the “base” area.
    Motivating self-talk.
    Concentration technique.
Focus on the strings look of the racket.
Return to the new game point.

  • Routine when point lost:
Return immediately to the “base” area.
Symbolically clean the lost spot with the towel.
Motivating thinking and / or self-talk.
Return to the playing area with a strong body attitude.

SERVE MENTAL COACHING ROUTINE PATTERNS CREATION

To improve attention & concentration on serve

Specifically, in this tennis video, we will see how a habit with awareness of mental and emotional disturbances is created from the beginning, and how to transform it into a POSITIVE MENTAL ROUTINE IN THE SERVICE

We have the collaboration of Axel Herberg Amoros (currently National Ranking # 190), to find out what makes the player fail and what his limiting thoughts are. At the beginning, the player practices the serve in training with his coach and / or with his Mental Coach.

Later, the steps that have been taken during the Mental Coaching session (in the room) were:

  • Observation of the player’s pre-serve routine.
  • Open questions that facilitate awareness of the player’s negative thoughts.
  • Identification of the first limiting words that the player identifies
  • Awareness of thoughts.
  • 2 negative thoughts become conscious: “Don’t fail” and “don’t gamble so much.”
  • Identification of body attitude and associated emotion and negative verbalization associated with the failure.
  • A new post-failure negative thought is identified: “How can I miss this ball?”
  • Identification of another associated emotion “THE RAGE” in the pre-serve routine (the player’s laughter reveals the recognition of his post-failure emotion).

A new simulation of the pre-serve routine is carried out, raising awareness and reducing the negative thoughts that limit your concentration. At the end, the new pre-serve routine is applied on the court, repetition and integration.

CONSCIOUS BODY WORK FOCUS

Work from bottom up

When we start a process of MENTAL COACHING ON THE TRACK, it is important to start focusing on simple aspects and work from “BOTTOM UP”, that is to say…

… from THE BODY first, then THE EMOTIONS, and finally THE RATIONAL PART (mind, thoughts).

In this case, in this tennis video, we propose a MENTAL COACHING job on the court to improve attention and concentration and accustom the mind to maintain focus for longer, very specific repetition tasks are carried out, giving a single instruction “focus in the legs ”(in this case of specific work) … from the corporal conscience.

Then, by prolonging the exercise, it allows you to observe several elements:

  • How do you adapt when you start to get tired?
  • What part of the body and / or movement loses quality and control?
  • What is your level of resilience?
  • What body attitude begins to appear?
  • What emotional management do you do?
  • Finally, after this specific work, there is an additional work of Personal Mental Coaching with the tennis player so that he can answer these questions to become aware of what his management mechanisms are in the face of effort and the specific attentional focus.

EMOTIONS : INTRODUCTION TO MENTAL COACHING

LOS MONTEROS RACKET CLUB - MARBELLA

To begin with, it is important to start an initial work with young tennis players in a group, leaving a space to be able to share the emotional experiences of each player…

Group work helps to discover my difficulties, reflected in others and thus feel that “I do not live it alone or alone, but that other adolescents are also suffering: this is what we call UNIVERSALITY.

At LOS MONTEROS RACKET CLUB (Marbella), counting on the sensitivity & collaboration of Mane MUNOZ TORRES as Sport Manager, we have been able to offer an introduction to MENTAL COACHING through a group session focused on EMOTIONS.

Of course, emotional management is one of the fundamental mental pillars of any tennis player. In this group session of young adolescent tennis players, we have launched a work of AWARENESS of what they feel and help them express it.

EMOTIONS are one of the 3 CENTERS (Emotions – Body – Mind) that must be worked on in MENTAL COACHING.

TIPS FOR THE IN BETWEEN POINTS ROUTINE

Interview of Miguel TOME GARCIA – Tennis Mental Coach

DISCOVER THE 4 STAGES or 16′ CURE ROUTINE MENTAL TIPS in order to improve your mental toughness and boost your performance…

In a  tennis match competition, you only play actively around 30% of the time. So in the 70% you are not playing and you need to learn how to manage your emotions, your negative toughts, your beliefs …. For this, it is important to develop a strong MENTAL IN BETWEEN POINTS ROUTINE.

INTERVIEW TO TONI NADAL

“I undestand sport as a mental issue”

(Subtitles in english)

Interview by Daniel Spatz with Toni NADAL who gives his vision of the skills of a high-performance tennis player and clarifies that for him the mental factor with willpower are….

… determinants and fundamental to be a high-level player.
For my part, I would like to be able to CLOSE the understanding and importance of MENTAL WORK in competitive tennis.
Few people like Rafael Nadal have the mental capacity to maintain a high level of MENTAL STRENGTH (effort, resilience, concentration, routines,…) for so long and for so many years, which for me makes it exceptional.
For this reason, I am convinced by my experience as a MENTAL COACH, in accompanying tennis players so that they develop those MENTAL SKILLS that provide them with TOOLS and RESOURCES in difficult match situations.
The difficult thing is when one, despite having a bad day, bad feelings, bad serve,… etc.. continues to look for other mental and tennis resources to give his 100% in the match, and not “leave the match” or stay in the complaint, in frustration, in anger…

Miguel Tomé Garcia

Tennis Mental Coach (Tennis Malgrat 2017-2018, ASP Academy Marbella 2021-2022)

(English subtitles)

INTERVIEW to Miguel TOME:

To start, I’m Miguel Tome, founder of TMC (Tennis Mental Coaching) project. I give support to kids, Juniors or Pro tennis players.

I help them to integrate greater self-awareness into matches, to be able to…

… manage anger and frustration after an unforced error, to teach them to lower their stress or anxiety level before or during a competition, to create routines to manage their level activation, learn to stay focused, define mental match strategies … etc, to improve their performance in competition.

One of the topics covered in this video is the ATTENTIONAL FOCUS.

“It is one of the main difficulties faced by young tennis players due to current social habits.

In a society where there is a great dispersion due to the multiple stimuli that cause a great continuous dispersion such as social networks, continuous use of the mobile, continuous news, … etc “.

“It is a problem of this generation, and more than before.”

“Attentional focus work is an important issue to improve the performance of a young tennis player” – Miguel Tomé

Miguel Angel ("Miki") Viadas

Competition Groups Tennis Coach

(English subtitles)

INTERVIEW to Miki VIADAS:

In first hand, with more than 20 years of experience as tennis trainer, and particularly with kids & Juniors in tennis competition groups. Miki shares with us her experience:

“The 4 biggest difficulties a tennis player can have are: ….

lack of attention and concentration, frustration, lack of motivation and pressure.

“It is difficult to get the attention and concentration of a player and more difficult to achieve it for a long period of time

“The pressure they have is from an early age, from the moment they start competing, from a young age”

“I have always considered that tennis has to be divided into 3 main parts: the hand, the legs and the head. The head is the most forgotten part of these three, especially at very early ages; high competition has been studied more for a long time but at the basic levels, the mental part is the great forgotten one

“The main sources of stress that a player can have is winning or losing, is to satisfy their parents, their coach, manage frustration

At the end, “The figure of the MENTAL COACH  is very important to give us guidelines/routines, to face the different situations before, during and after a match” – Miki Viadas
